Proof of funds for Canada immigration is required for many applicants in the Express Entry system. The funds show that an applicant can support themselves and their family after arriving in Canada.

Proof Of Funds For Canada Immigration Update

Settlement funds are part of the minimum requirements for the Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Federal Skilled Trades Program. Applicants under the Canadian Experience Class generally do not need to provide proof of settlement funds.

IRCC says it updates the settlement-fund amounts each year using 50% of the low-income cut-off totals. The current federal table lists amounts updated July 7, 2025.

Who Needs Proof Of Funds For Express Entry?

Applicants must generally provide proof of funds if they apply through Express Entry under the Federal Skilled Worker Program or the Federal Skilled Trades Program.

Applicants do not need to show settlement funds if they are applying under the Canadian Experience Class. An applicant may also be exempt when they are authorized to work in Canada and have a valid job offer, including when applying under the Federal Skilled Worker Program or Federal Skilled Trades Program.

Express Entry may determine that a candidate is eligible for more than one program. IRCC therefore advises applicants to keep their funds information up to date until they receive an invitation to apply.

The online system currently asks all applicants to upload a proof-of-funds document. An exempt applicant should upload a letter explaining that they are applying under the Canadian Experience Class or that they have a valid job offer and authorization to work in Canada.

Current Express Entry Settlement Funds Amounts

The required amount depends on the total number of family members included in the calculation:

Family sizeMinimum funds in Canadian dollars
1$15,263
2$19,001
3$23,360
4$28,362
5$32,168
6$36,280
7$40,392
Each additional family member$4,112

If more money is available, IRCC says applicants should list the full amount in their Express Entry profile or permanent residence application. Applicants should treat proof of funds for Canada immigration as a current requirement and verify the federal page before submitting because IRCC updates the table annually.

How To Count Family Members

For settlement-fund purposes, family size includes:

  • the principal applicant;
  • the spouse or common-law partner;
  • dependent children; and
  • the spouse or common-law partner’s dependent children.

A spouse, common-law partner or dependent child must be included even if that person is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or is not accompanying the applicant to Canada.

Documents That Can Prove Settlement Funds

Applicants must obtain official letters from each bank or financial institution where they hold relevant banking or investment accounts.

The documents used for proof of funds for Canada immigration must be printed on the institution’s letterhead and include:

  • the institution’s address, telephone number and email address;
  • the applicant’s name;
  • the applicant’s outstanding debts, including credit-card debts and loans; and
  • for each current banking or investment account, the account number, opening date, current balance and average balance during the previous six months.

A document showing only a current balance may not contain all the information requested by IRCC. Applicants with accounts at more than one institution should obtain letters covering each relevant institution.

Rules About Accessing The Money

The funds must be available both when the applicant applies and when IRCC issues a permanent resident visa, if the application is approved.

The applicant must also prove legal access to the money for use after arriving in Canada. IRCC does not accept equity in real property or money borrowed from another person as settlement funds.

Money in a joint account with an accompanying spouse may be counted. Money held only in a spouse’s name may also be considered, but the applicant must prove they have access to it.

Does A Job Offer Remove The Funds Requirement?

A job offer alone does not automatically remove the requirement. The Express Entry exemption requires both authorization to work in Canada and a valid job offer.

Applicants should not assume that a work permit by itself is enough. IRCC states that a work permit on its own is not a job offer, even if it is an open work permit. The job offer must also meet the applicable program requirements.

Proof Of Funds And Provincial Nominee Programs

Provincial Nominee Programs do not use one universal settlement-fund rule. Each province or territory has its own requirements, and applicants must meet both the applicable provincial or territorial requirements and the federal requirements for the immigration process they use.

Applicants nominated through an Express Entry-linked provincial stream must be eligible for the provincial or territorial stream and for one of the three Express Entry programs. Applicants using a non-Express Entry PNP process should follow the instructions issued by the nominating province or territory and IRCC.

Quebec does not operate a Provincial Nominee Program. It selects skilled workers through its own immigration system, which has separate financial self-sufficiency requirements.

Common Proof Of Funds Mistakes

  • Using the wrong family size;
  • omitting a spouse or dependent child who is not accompanying the applicant;
  • submitting only a bank statement when a financial-institution letter is required;
  • failing to provide the six-month average balance requested by IRCC;
  • counting property equity or borrowed money;
  • allowing funds to fall below the required amount during processing;
  • reporting less money in the profile than is actually available; and
  • assuming that a job offer alone creates an exemption.

How To Prepare The Application

To complete proof of funds for Canada immigration, applicants should calculate the required amount using every family member included in the application. They should then obtain a compliant letter from each relevant bank or financial institution and check the account numbers, opening dates, balances, six-month averages, debts and contact details.

The funds should remain legally available throughout processing. Proof of settlement funds is separate from government fees, biometrics fees, travel expenses and other costs of establishing yourself in Canada.

What Happens When You Arrive In Canada?

The settlement-fund requirement is separate from Canada’s border declaration rules. Travellers must declare monetary instruments and currency exceeding CAN$10,000 when entering Canada. The funds that must be declared can include cash, cheques, bank drafts, travellers’ cheques, money orders and certain securities.

The safest approach is to verify the current IRCC instructions, use the correct family size and provide documents demonstrating legal access to the required funds.
