Express Entry is Canada’s online system for managing permanent residence applications under three federal skilled-worker programs and portions of the Provincial Nominee Program.

As of September 28, 2026, the three federal programs managed through the system are the Canadian Experience Class, the Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Federal Skilled Trades Program.

Eligible candidates create an online profile and enter a pool, where Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada ranks them using the Comprehensive Ranking System, commonly called the CRS.

Being eligible to enter the pool does not guarantee an Invitation to Apply or permanent residence.

How Express Entry Works

The process begins when a candidate creates a profile through an IRCC secure account.

The profile contains information about age, education, language ability, work experience, family composition and other factors that affect eligibility and ranking.

IRCC checks whether the candidate appears eligible for at least one of the three federal programs managed through Express Entry.

Eligible candidates are placed in the pool and receive a CRS score out of 1,200 points.

IRCC conducts general, program-specific and category-based rounds of invitations. Candidates with the highest rankings who meet the requirements of the applicable round may be invited.

An Invitation to Apply is valid for 60 days. The applicant must submit the permanent residence application within that period.

IRCC then assesses the application against program requirements, the information in the profile, category requirements where applicable and admissibility rules.

The Three Express Entry Programs

Canadian Experience Class

The Canadian Experience Class is designed for skilled workers with qualifying Canadian work experience.

Applicants generally need at least one year, or 1,560 hours, of authorized paid skilled work experience in Canada during the three years before applying. The experience may be full-time or an equivalent amount of part-time work.

The minimum language level is CLB 7 for work in TEER 0 or TEER 1 occupations and CLB 5 for work in TEER 2 or TEER 3 occupations.

There is no education requirement for the Canadian Experience Class, although education can improve a candidate’s CRS score.

Canadian Experience Class applicants do not generally need to prove settlement funds.

Federal Skilled Worker Program

The Federal Skilled Worker Program is intended for skilled workers with foreign or Canadian work experience who plan to become permanent residents outside Quebec.

Applicants must generally have at least one year of continuous, paid, skilled work experience in a TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 occupation in the previous 10 years. The experience must generally be in the applicant’s primary occupation for the program.

They must also meet the required language level in English or French, have at least secondary education and satisfy the program’s selection-factor requirements.

A foreign-educated principal applicant generally needs an Educational Credential Assessment for Federal Skilled Worker Program eligibility. Other candidates may need an assessment to claim points for foreign education.

A job offer is not generally required for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, although a valid job offer can affect program selection-factor points.

Federal Skilled Trades Program

The Federal Skilled Trades Program is for qualified workers who meet the requirements for eligible skilled-trade occupations.

Applicants generally need at least two years of qualifying work experience in the skilled trade during the five years before applying.

They must also have either a valid full-time job offer for at least one year or a Canadian certificate of qualification in the trade, along with the required language results.

The minimum language requirement is lower for reading and writing than for speaking and listening: CLB 5 for speaking and listening and CLB 4 for reading and writing, or the corresponding French NCLC levels.

Applicants under the Federal Skilled Trades Program may need to show settlement funds unless they are authorized to work in Canada and have a valid job offer.

Express Entry CRS Scores

The CRS ranks candidates in the pool rather than simply determining whether they meet the minimum program requirements.

CRS points can come from core or human-capital factors, a spouse or common-law partner, skill transferability and additional factors.

Core factors include age, education, official language ability and Canadian work experience.

Additional points can be available for factors such as French-language ability, Canadian education, a sibling in Canada and a provincial or territorial nomination.

A provincial or territorial nomination through a linked stream can provide 600 additional CRS points.

IRCC removed CRS points for job offers on March 25, 2025.

That change affects CRS ranking points. It does not remove other job-offer rules that may apply to a program or provincial nominee stream. For example, the Federal Skilled Trades Program generally requires a valid job offer or a certificate of qualification, while a valid job offer may provide Federal Skilled Worker Program selection-factor points.

CRS cut-off scores can change from one invitation round to another because IRCC may use different round types, invitation numbers and eligibility requirements.

Express Entry Invitation Rounds

IRCC can hold general, program-specific or category-based rounds of invitations.

In a general round, IRCC invites the highest-ranking candidates who are eligible for one of the three federal programs.

In a program-specific round, invitations are limited to candidates eligible for a selected program, such as the Canadian Experience Class or a Provincial Nominee Program stream linked to the system.

In a category-based round, candidates must meet the requirements of a category established to support an identified economic goal.

IRCC publishes the date, round type, number of invitations, lowest CRS score and tie-breaking rule for each round.

The tie-breaking rule generally uses the date and time when a candidate submitted their Express Entry profile.

Current Express Entry Categories

IRCC’s 2026 category-based selection page lists categories for French-language proficiency, healthcare and social services, science, technology, engineering and mathematics, trades, education and transport.

It also lists categories for physicians with Canadian work experience, senior managers with Canadian work experience, researchers with Canadian work experience and skilled military recruits. The skilled military recruits category includes a Canadian Armed Forces job-offer requirement.

Meeting a category requirement alone is not enough to receive an invitation.

Candidates must first be eligible for one of the three federal programs and must satisfy the specific instructions for the round.

Category-based selection supplements other invitation rounds and does not guarantee that IRCC will hold a round for every category at a particular time.

Language Tests And Education Documents

Candidates must take an approved language test and enter the results in their profile.

Approved English tests include CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core.

Approved French tests include TEF Canada and TCF Canada.

Language results must be less than two years old when the Express Entry profile is created and when the permanent residence application is submitted. Candidates must also maintain valid results while in the pool.

Applicants claiming foreign education must obtain an Educational Credential Assessment for immigration purposes when required for program eligibility or when claiming CRS education points.

The assessment must come from an organization or professional body designated by IRCC. Applicants should enter the correct education equivalency and keep the assessment report and reference number for the profile and application.

Express Entry Proof Of Funds

Proof of funds is generally required for the Federal Skilled Worker Program and Federal Skilled Trades Program.

Canadian Experience Class applicants do not need settlement funds, and applicants who are authorized to work in Canada and have a valid job offer may also be exempt when applying under the Federal Skilled Worker or Federal Skilled Trades program.

The funds must be legally accessible and available both when the application is submitted and when IRCC issues a permanent resident visa.

Family membersMinimum funds in Canadian dollars
1$15,263
2$19,001
3$23,360
4$28,362
5$32,168
6$36,280
7$40,392
Each additional family member$4,112

These amounts are based on the family size declared for immigration purposes, including accompanying and non-accompanying spouses, common-law partners and dependent children. The amounts shown are the figures published by IRCC and updated July 7, 2025; candidates should confirm the current table before applying.

Documents Needed After An Invitation

Applicants who receive an Invitation to Apply should prepare a complete application before the 60-day deadline.

Documents may include valid passports, language-test results, education assessments, work reference letters, police certificates, proof of funds and civil-status documents.

IRCC may also require medical examinations, biometrics and additional evidence depending on the applicant’s history and circumstances.

Information in the permanent residence application must be accurate and consistent with the profile.

Misrepresentation can lead to refusal and other immigration consequences.

How To Improve An Express Entry Profile

Candidates can improve their ranking by retaking an approved language test, completing additional education, gaining qualifying work experience or obtaining a provincial nomination.

Improving English or French ability can increase both core language points and skill-transferability points.

French-language proficiency may also make a candidate eligible for a category-based round when the applicable requirements are met, including the required language level for that category.

Candidates should update their profile when their family situation, language results, education, work experience or other relevant information changes.

An updated profile does not guarantee an invitation, and candidates must continue to meet the requirements of the program and any category claimed.

Express Entry And Quebec

Quebec selects its own skilled workers through separate immigration programs.

Applicants using the system must plan to live outside Quebec unless they are applying through a different pathway that specifically concerns Quebec selection.

Work experience gained in Quebec may still be relevant in some circumstances, but applicants must be able to demonstrate that they do not plan to settle there.

Key Takeaway For Express Entry Candidates

Express Entry is a competitive ranking system, not a first-come, first-served application queue.

The strongest strategy is to confirm program eligibility first, submit accurate information, maintain valid language and education documents, monitor CRS performance and respond quickly if an Invitation to Apply is issued.

Because invitation types, category instructions and CRS cut-offs can vary, candidates should rely on the current IRCC pages and round instructions rather than old draw results or unofficial predictions.
